toishi 砥石whetstone

Keep your skills sharp while AI writes your code.

Agents are great at the busywork, and they still need a developer at the helm. Toishi shows you, on your own machine, which skills you still use and helps you practise the ones going dull.

Practise this week
Areas where you typed little yourself lately, the ones most worth practising first. Areas you are happy to hand off are left out (Settings → About you).
  1. Database queriesTask

You typed 7% of the last 3,064 lines of Database queries. The last time was last month.

Write one query with a join by hand and check its plan.

  2. SQLxFramework

Your last hand-written SQLx was last month, and it is 7% of 3,064 lines.

Pick one SQLx feature you usually let AI handle and use it yourself this week.

  3. Async & concurrencyTask

Only 7% of 2,083 lines of Async & concurrency came from your keyboard; the last ones last month.

Run two tasks concurrently and join their results by hand.

1. The problem

Skills fade when AI does the practice.

You learn a query language by writing queries, and a framework by working through its errors. An agent does both in seconds. Skills you had start to fade, and the ones you never practised do not form.

2. Why it goes unnoticed

Nothing tells you it is happening.

The code still ships, and no tool shows which skills you stopped using. You notice when you sit down to code by hand and need a warm-up you never used to need. In a team it shows up later still, as code nobody can explain.

3. What Toishi does

It keeps count and helps you practise.

Toishi measures what you still write yourself, and how much, for each language, framework and kind of work. When a skill goes dull, it gives you exercises to sharpen it again. An hour or two a week is plenty, and it is the part of the job most of us became developers for.

For developers

See who wrote each line of your work, which skills you hand off to AI, and how practice works.

For teams

See which skills and repositories the team now leaves to AI, early, and give everyone time to practise. Nobody's own stats leave their machine.

Privacy

What Toishi records, how it is encrypted, and how to see every call that left your machine.

What the research says

The studies so far are early and small. They point the same way: getting working code from AI is not the same as learning how it works.

Questions

Do I have to use less AI?

No. Keep using it where it helps. Toishi shows what you are no longer practising, and you decide what to keep doing yourself.

How much time does practice take?

An hour or two a week is plenty. Toishi suggests a few small exercises each week, and you pick when to do them.

Does it read my code?

It looks at each change on your machine to count lines and recognise the kind of work, such as a React hook or a SQL join. It keeps the counts and labels, never the code.

Will my manager see my stats?

No. Your stats stay on your machine. A team lead sees totals for groups of five or more people, nothing per person.

Which tools does it work with?

Claude Code and Cursor through their hooks, and any editor through the files it saves in your git repositories. Setup connects them for you.

Why do I need an account?

The app signs in to know your plan, and you download it from your account. Our server learns who you are and which plan you have, never what you code. Your account cannot open your data: that takes your password, on your machine.

Which systems does it run on?

macOS.
